Gov. Yusuf Commissions Pensioners’ National Headquarters in Abuja, Donates ₦100m
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has commissioned the Comrade Godwin Abumisi Pensioners’ Legacy House, the national headquarters of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), in Abuja, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of retirees.
The governor also donated ₦100 million to the Nigeria Union of Pensioners in support of its activities.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Yusuf described the Legacy House as more than a physical structure, saying it symbolises the nation’s appreciation for the years of dedicated service rendered by retired public servants.
He stressed that pensions are earned entitlements rather than privileges, adding that the treatment of retirees reflects the commitment of any responsible government to social justice and public service.
Governor Yusuf reiterated his administration’s determination to clear the outstanding gratuity liabilities inherited by his government before the end of its tenure while sustaining the prompt payment of monthly pensions.
He also recalled that his administration increased the minimum monthly pension in Kano State from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000 to cushion the effects of the rising cost of living on retirees.
The governor highlighted Kano State’s continued support for the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, including hosting the union’s National Delegates Conference, noting that the recognition accorded to the state by the union would further encourage the implementation of people-centred policies.
Earlier, the President of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Comrade Godwin Abumisi, commended Governor Yusuf for what he described as his commitment to pension reforms.
He recalled that the governor was recognised as the Most Pensioners-Friendly Governor of the Year 2024, citing his administration’s efforts toward improving the welfare of retirees.
Abumisi also said the Kano State Government had settled ₦32 billion out of the ₦48.6 billion gratuity liabilities inherited by the current administration, describing the payments as a major relief to thousands of pensioners and their families.
Also speaking, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, praised Governor Yusuf for supporting labour unions in Kano State and across the country.
At the event, the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners endorsed Governor Yusuf for a second term, citing his administration’s performance across key sectors of the state’s economy.
Governor Yusuf congratulated the union on the completion of the Legacy House and expressed confidence that the facility would strengthen collaboration and provide lasting support for pensioners across Nigeria.
