Kano Cancer Centre Urges Early Detection to Improve Sarcoma Survival

The Kano State Comprehensive Cancer Centre has called for increased awareness and early detection of sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, stressing that timely diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes and survival rates.

The appeal was made during an awareness programme organised to mark Sarcoma Awareness Month, where medical experts urged residents to seek prompt medical attention for persistent or unusual lumps and unexplained swelling. (gazettengr.com)

Speaking at the event, the Director of the Kano State Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, said sarcoma is a rare cancer that develops in bones and soft tissues such as muscles, fat, blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues.

She explained that although the disease is uncommon, delayed diagnosis often leads to poor treatment outcomes, making public awareness and early medical intervention essential. (gazettengr.com)

According to her, warning signs may include persistent swelling, lumps that continue to grow, unexplained pain in the bones or soft tissues, and masses that do not resolve over time.

Dr. Shinkafi-Bagudu advised members of the public to avoid self-medication or relying solely on traditional remedies when such symptoms appear, urging them instead to seek evaluation at qualified healthcare facilities for proper diagnosis and treatment.

She also stressed the need for continuous public education to improve awareness of rare cancers and encourage early presentation at health facilities.

The awareness campaign formed part of efforts by the Kano State Comprehensive Cancer Centre to promote cancer prevention, early diagnosis and access to specialised treatment services in the state.
