Hundreds Join Dala Hill Hike to Promote Kano’s History, Culture and Healthy Living

A community hike to the historic Dala Hill has brought together government officials, health professionals, security agencies, civil society actors and residents in an initiative aimed at promoting Kano’s cultural heritage, healthy living and tourism.

The event, held on Saturday, July 11, was convened by the Director-General of Kan-Invest, Nazir Halliru, as part of efforts to encourage residents to reconnect with nature while showcasing the historical significance of one of Kano’s most iconic landmarks.

Participants began the exercise with a walk from Mambayya House in Gwammaja to Dala Hill before climbing to the summit. The programme also featured aerobics, yoga, a health talk and a guided tour of archaeological sites associated with the ancient history of Kano.

Speaking during the event, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State History and Culture Bureau, Arch. Ahmad Abba Yusuf, delivered a presentation on the history of Dala Hill and the origins of Kano, while the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health Services, Dr. Ibrahim Musa, conducted a health awareness session highlighting the benefits of physical activity and healthy living.

Participants also toured archaeological locations on the hill believed to be associated with the legendary figures Tsumburbura and Barbushe, whose stories form part of Kano’s historical narrative.

Reflecting on the event, Halliru said the initiative was designed not only to promote physical fitness but also to encourage residents to appreciate and tell Kano’s story through its history, culture, people and tourist attractions.

He noted that the overwhelming turnout exceeded expectations and demonstrated growing public interest in activities that combine recreation with cultural education.

“Our aim is to tell the stories of Kano—its beauty, history, culture, people and hidden treasures. If we don’t tell our own stories, no one else will tell them the way they deserve to be told,” he said.

Halliru added that similar social and heritage-focused activities would be organised in the future to encourage greater appreciation of Kano’s historical sites and help reshape perceptions about the state.

He thanked the Kano State Government for providing an enabling environment for the initiative and acknowledged the contributions of the Ministries of Culture and Tourism, Livestock Development and Women Affairs, as well as the Kano State commands of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

He also appreciated the support of resource persons, volunteers, coaches, photographers and other individuals who contributed to the success of the event.

Many participants described the hike as an opportunity to exercise, build new relationships and gain a deeper understanding of Kano’s history.

They said the event offered a platform to reconnect with colleagues and friends outside formal work settings while promoting the state’s rich cultural heritage.

The organisers expressed optimism that future editions would attract even more participants as part of broader efforts to promote domestic tourism, preserve Kano’s historical landmarks and encourage healthier lifestyles among residents.
