61 Kano Inmates Complete Qur’an Memorisation Programme at Custodial Centre

Sixty-one inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kurmawa, in Kano have successfully completed the memorisation and recitation of the Holy Qur’an as part of the Nigerian Correctional Service’s rehabilitation programme.

The achievement was announced by the Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Misbahu Lawan Kofar Nassarawa.

According to the statement, the graduating class comprised 61 inmates—55 males and six females—many of whom had little or no prior knowledge of complete Qur’anic recitation before their admission into the custodial facility. Through structured religious instruction, discipline and dedication, they successfully completed the memorisation of the Holy Qur’an.

To commemorate the achievement, the Nigerian Correctional Service, in collaboration with the Chokali Humanitarian Foundation, presented welfare packages to the graduates. The items included new clothing, mattresses, blankets and financial support aimed at encouraging personal development and easing their reintegration into society after release.

The Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Ahmed Yusuf Lakpene, described the programme as part of the Service’s commitment to inmate reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.

Lakpene commended the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, for promoting educational, vocational and moral development programmes across custodial centres nationwide. He said such initiatives equip inmates with the knowledge, skills and values needed to become responsible and productive citizens after serving their sentences.

The Officer-in-Charge of the Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ibrahim Rambo, thanked the Kano State Command and the Chokali Humanitarian Foundation for supporting the rehabilitation programme, describing the Qur’an graduation ceremony as a reflection of effective collaboration and the Service’s commitment to holistic inmate development.

Also speaking, Professor Aliyu Haruna commended the Correctional Service for its sustained efforts to reform inmates through faith-based rehabilitation programmes, noting that such interventions play an important role in preparing inmates for responsible reintegration into society.

Chairperson of the Kano State Prerogative of Mercy Committee, Hajiya Azumi Namadi Bebeji, reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s commitment to improving inmate welfare and commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his continued support for inmates across custodial centres in the state.

The event also featured the presentation of certificates to the 61 graduates by Dan Ruwatan Kano, Alhaji Ibrahim Ado Bayero, while special prayers were offered for the inmates, the Nigerian Correctional Service and the country.
