Kano Declares Tuesday Public Holiday for Islamic New Year

The Kano State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.

The announcement was made to enable residents, particularly Muslim faithful, to observe the commencement of the new Hijrah calendar year.

The Islamic New Year, which begins with the month of Muharram, marks a significant event in the Islamic calendar and serves as a period for reflection, prayer, and renewed commitment to faith and community values.

The state government urged residents to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and continued progress in Kano State and Nigeria as a whole.

It also called on citizens to uphold the values of tolerance, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence as they celebrate the new Islamic year.

Government offices and public institutions are expected to remain closed during the holiday, while normal official activities will resume thereafter.

The declaration places Kano among states observing the commencement of the Islamic New Year with official recognition and public observance.
