NHRC Receives 118 Human Rights Complaints in Kano in June

The Kano State office of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says it received 118 complaints of alleged human rights violations in June, with cases involving child rights, domestic violence and economic rights accounting for the majority of reports.

The State Coordinator of the commission, Shehu Abdullahi, disclosed this in an interview in Kano on Tuesday.

According to Abdullahi, 75 of the complaints were related to child abandonment and child rights violations, 23 involved domestic violence and the right to life, while the remaining 20 covered issues bordering on economic and cultural rights, law enforcement abuses and neglect of parental responsibilities.

He said the commission had resolved 82 of the reported cases, while 36 remained under investigation or were yet to be concluded.

Abdullahi added that the commission also intervened in marital disputes through mediation, helping couples resolve disagreements outside the courtroom.

He urged couples to exercise patience and tolerance in managing family responsibilities to reduce domestic conflicts and protect the rights of vulnerable family members.

The NHRC coordinator reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to promote and protect human rights across Kano State.

He said the commission would continue to provide accessible mechanisms for receiving complaints while intensifying public enlightenment on human rights issues.
