NDLEA Seizes 1,499 Bottles of Codeine Syrup in Kano, Arrests Suspect
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a suspect and seized 1,499 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup during an intelligence-led operation in Kano State.
The NDLEA confirmed that the suspect, 45-year-old Ashiru Bala, was apprehended in Lambu community in Tofa Local Government Area.
According to the agency, the arrest followed an intelligence-driven operation carried out on February 25, 2026, leading to the discovery of the large quantity of codeine syrup in the suspect’s possession.
The state commander of the NDLEA, Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal, disclosed that the suspect had transported the consignment from Abuja and intended to deliver it to a local dealer in Kano for illicit consumption.
Investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly admitted to transporting such illegal substances for about two years. He also stated that he previously worked in township services in Abuja for four years and had received significant payments for each consignment he delivered.
The NDLEA commander said the operation underscores the agency’s determination to protect communities from the dangers of illicit drug distribution.
He added that intelligence-driven enforcement operations would continue, especially during periods of increased demand such as festive seasons, to dismantle drug networks and ensure offenders are brought to justice.
The agency said the arrest forms part of its ongoing “Operation Ramadan Mubarak,” launched to intensify the fight against drug trafficking in line with the national goal of creating a drug-free society.
