Kano Govt Scraps Higher Education Ministry, Merges It With Education Ministry

The Kano State Government has approved the merger of the Ministry of Higher Education with the Ministry of Education as part of a restructuring aimed at improving coordination in the state’s education sector.

The decision was approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, according to a statement issued on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

Under the new arrangement, the unified ministry will operate as the Ministry of Education, while a Directorate of Higher Education will be created within the ministry to oversee tertiary education activities in the state.

The directorate will be headed by a Permanent Secretary and supported by relevant personnel responsible for managing higher education institutions.

The statement said agencies previously under the defunct Ministry of Higher Education, including the Kano State Scholarship Board, will return to the Ministry of Education. State-owned universities and other higher education institutions will also be supervised by the new directorate.

The restructuring, according to the government, forms part of ongoing reforms in the education sector aimed at improving policy coordination, eliminating duplication of responsibilities, and reducing the cost of governance.

Governor Yusuf said the move is intended to enhance efficiency, accountability, and the overall administration of education in the state.

He added that the government remains committed to implementing reforms aimed at strengthening the education system and improving opportunities for younger generations.

The Office of the Secretary to the State Government and the Office of the Head of Service have been directed to ensure the immediate realignment of the affected ministries and their departments.
