Kano Government Reaffirms Commitment to Social Development and Education Through ‘Snacks for Thought’ Initiative

The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting social development initiatives and strengthening the education sector through sustainable programs that improve access, inclusion, and child welfare.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf gave the assurance on Tuesday while flagging off a pilot scheme tagged “Snacks for Thought” under the Federal Government’s National Home-Grown School Feeding Program at Nasarawa Primary School, Kano.

Represented by the State Commissioner, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Adamu Aliyu Kibiya, the Governor commended the initiative and noted that Kano has always been a pioneer of progressive educational programs, including school feeding introduced during the administration of former Governor Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso.

“This legacy left by our leader aligns strongly with our administration’s commitment to education, youth development, and social welfare under the human capital development pillar of our policy trust agenda,”
the Governor stated.

He assured continued investment in education and human capital, pledging to expand the program to more schools after a successful impact assessment. He also emphasized the need for transparency, accountability, and collaboration with stakeholders to sustain the initiative.

Governor Yusuf thanked the Federal Government for selecting Kano among the pilot states for the complementary feeding program and acknowledged the contributions of development partners, private sector actors, and community stakeholders.

In his remarks, the State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, represented by Yusha’u Hamza, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, described the program as a strategic intervention to improve access to quality education and pupil retention.

“By providing nutritious snacks to pupils, we are not just filling their stomachs but fueling learning and hope for the future,”
Makoda said.

He added that the state remains committed to its Education Emergency Recovery Plan and Mutual Accountability Framework, both designed to strengthen the sector and improve learning outcomes.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Yakubu Adam Kofar Mata, said the pilot scheme is one of several interventions designed to promote child education and social inclusion nationwide.

He commended Governor Yusuf’s administration for supporting the program and revealed that additional initiatives are being developed to improve primary education across Nigeria.

Earlier, Princess Dr. Aderemi Adebowale, Program Manager, National Home-Grown School Feeding Program, explained that the pilot scheme would initially cover selected public schools in Kano, with plans to extend it across the state as implementation progresses.

“The Federal Government is committed to ensuring that all public-school pupils are motivated with hygienic and nutritious food during school hours,”
she noted.

Stakeholders present at the flag-off pledged full support for the successful implementation of the ‘Snacks for Thought’ program, which aligns with the state’s broader vision to enhance education, youth development, and social progress.
