Kano Delegation Arrives in Lisbon for Study Tour Ahead of ₦1 Trillion Light Rail Project
A high-powered delegation from the Kano State Government has arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, for a technical study tour as part of preparations for the proposed Kano Light Rail Project.
The delegation, led by the Commissioner for Transportation, Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi, and the Chairman of the Kano Line Resuscitation Committee, Alhaji Saidu Abdullahi Shuaibu, is visiting transport and engineering institutions in Lisbon and Almada.
Officials from the Kano State Ministry of Transport and Kano Line are engaging with transport and engineering firms, including Mota-Engil and MTS, to study rail infrastructure development, operational systems, maintenance structures, safety standards and sustainable transport financing models.
The visit forms part of strategic steps by the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf toward establishing a modern rail network within Kano metropolis and surrounding areas.
The proposed Kano Light Rail Project is expected to improve urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion and stimulate socio-economic growth across the state.
During the study tour, the delegation is seeking insights into international best practices in rail planning and implementation while exploring opportunities for technical partnerships, knowledge exchange and potential investment collaboration to support the project’s long-term efficiency and sustainability.
In a related development, the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved ₦1 trillion for the establishment of the Kano Light Rail Project under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The rail project is expected to create employment opportunities, facilitate trade and commerce, improve access to major urban centres and promote environmentally friendly transportation alternatives.
When completed, the light rail system is projected to connect major residential, commercial and industrial hubs within Kano, with the aim of improving productivity and quality of life for residents.
The Kano State Government says it remains committed to delivering a modern, reliable and efficient rail transport system that meets international standards and addresses the growing transportation needs of the state.
