Kano Assembly Moves to Impeach Deputy Governor Gwarzo Over Alleged Misconduct

The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The impeachment move was presented during plenary at the Assembly in accordance with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

Lawmakers accused the deputy governor of misconduct linked to the alleged diversion of more than ₦1.6 billion, among other claims relating to his conduct in office.

Following the presentation of the impeachment notice, the Assembly formally notified the deputy governor and granted him two weeks to respond to the allegations and defend himself before further legislative action is taken.

Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has served as deputy governor since May 2023 under the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf, the governor of Kano State.

The development marks a major political development in the state, coming weeks after the Assembly had earlier dismissed rumours suggesting that lawmakers were planning to remove the deputy governor from office.
