350 Students to Study Abroad, 240 in Nigerian Universities as Kano Expands Investment in Education

KANO, NIGERIA — The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially flagged off the second batch of 590 beneficiaries under the state government’s 1,001 Postgraduate Foreign and Domestic Scholarship Programme — a flagship initiative aimed at empowering the next generation of Kano’s intellectuals and professionals.

The development was announced in a statement released on Wednesday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director General, Media and Publicity, Kano Government House.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Kano, Governor Yusuf reaffirmed that the scholarship programme — originally introduced by Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso — was revived by his administration to strengthen the intellectual capacity and global competitiveness of Kano youths through advanced education opportunities both at home and abroad.

Governor Yusuf revealed that the first batch of 418 postgraduate students benefited from the scheme at a total cost of ₦5 billion, noting that all have successfully completed their studies, with some already employed internationally.

“This second phase involving 350 foreign and 240 domestic postgraduate students marks another milestone in our mission to build a strong knowledge base that positions Kano as a hub of excellence and innovation,” Governor Yusuf stated.

He congratulated the new beneficiaries for earning their places through academic merit and moral integrity, urging them to remain disciplined, focused, and serve as worthy ambassadors of Kano State and Nigeria.

Governor Yusuf also prayed for their safe journeys and academic success, assuring that his administration remains deeply committed to education as the foundation for progress, innovation, and sustainable development.

He further emphasized that the 1,001 Scholarship Programme is part of a broader education reform strategy, which includes the allocation of 31% of the 2025 state budget to education — the highest in Kano’s history.
